Journey of the World Youth Day Cross & Icon

World Youth Day Cross in Glasgow (Feb 2004)

This very same World Youth Day Cross and Icon came to Scotland for two weeks in February 2004.

It was brought to St Andrew's Cathedral at the beginning of the Glasgow leg of the pilgrimage. The following day, young people from the parishes and schools of the archdiocese carried the Cross on foot through the streets of Glasgow out to meet the Bishops of Scotland at Scotus College in Bearsden.
The pilgrimage route covered St. Andrew's Cathedral, Glasgow Cross where St John Ogilvie was martyred, High Street, Glasgow Cathedral, St Mungo's parish, Bath Street, Charing Cross, St Columba's parish, Immaculate Conception parish and Scotus College. At each parish, there was a short period of prayer for children from primary schools and the parish communities. All in all, several thousand people participated in the various events, not to mention the many thousands who saw the witness of the young Cross-carriers throughout the city centre.
The following day, Archbishop Mario Conti celebrated mass with the Cross in Our Lady of Consolation Church in Govanhill. After an afternoon prayer service in St Stephen's parish, Dalmuir the Cross was collected by couriers to be transported to the South Tyrol on the next leg of its global pilgrimage.
